Search for North Andover’s oldest resident begins!
The North Andover Women’s Club (NAWC) is bringing back the tradition of honoring our oldest resident. On August 2, 1909, Mr. Edwin Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, a newspaper, forwarded to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns in New England an ornate engraved-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of the town, to be used by them until the appropriate time when it will be given to the next oldest citizen of the town.
Since the original Boston Post Cane went missing, the North Andover Women’s Club has purchased replicas while the search for the original continues. The replica will be awarded to a North Andover resident who has resided in Town for at least 25 years.
How does the search for the oldest resident work? It’s a simple nomination process where you can nominate yourself or anyone over the age of 90. Nominations will remain open for 30 days. The North Andover Women’s Club will contact the nominees and select the oldest nominee who accepts their nomination. The NAWC will then host a presentation event of the Boston Post Cane.
Any businesses that wish to provide additional honors to North Andover’s oldest resident are welcome. For more information about the event, the search for the original cane or to receive a nomination form, please email BostonPostCane@NAWomensClub.com or call Rosemary Connelly Smedile, President of the North Andover Women’s Club at 978-689-2949.
